The Reluctance of People to Completely Obey God
There is in the sinful hearts of all mankind an unwillingness to totally obey the commands of God. In the book of Exodus we read of the reluctance of Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go as God required him to do. No matter all the judgements of God upon Egypt in various plagues to overcome his reluctance, he still was unwilling to obey God. What are the reasons for people's reluctance to obey God ?
- It is the product of people's sinful hearts that have departed from God and are unwilling to submit to His authority. Mankind is sinfully at enmity with God with no love for God and has therefore no desire in the heart to obey God.
- It is the sinful pride in the human heart. People are to proud to humbly submit to the will, the requirements of God.
- It is the selfishness of the human heart that thinks there is pleasure, happiness and gain to be had in disobeying God.
- It is the obstinacy of the human heart that thinks it has the right to do whatever it wants, even if it involves disobeying God.
Mankind doesn't see the folly of contending with God as there can only be one winner and that is God. God makes very clear what the ultimate consequence of sinfully disobeying Him is, it's His eternal wrath falling upon us. The reality is that you are guilty of sinfully disobeying God, of not living as God requires you to do. You need to ask God in His mercy to forgive you through the shed blood, death of Christ on the cross. There is forgiveness only in Christ but God promises He will forgive all our inexcusable sins on faith in Christ Jesus. On faith in Christ the heart is made new and now desires God's glory and not reluctantly but lovingly seeks to obey Him. The heart is now willing to surrender our will to God's.
