"and there prayed"
Mark 1 v 35
The above is speaking of the Lord Jesus when He was praying. The gospels speak of Jesus prayers on eighteen occasions. We read of thanksgiving, intercession, and submission to the will of the Father in the prayers of Jesus. On notable occasions during Jesus life we find Him praying, such as His baptism, transfiguration, choosing the twelve disciples and just before His crucifixion.
When we see how the holy, all powerful God the Son in human flesh gave Himself to prayer, it's a reminder to every believer in Christ just how much we need to pray. We as Christians are saved by faith in a Saviour who prayed, so being saved by Him we need to pray also.
We are as believers to pray with other believers but also by ourselves as Jesus did. He was so busy but He never neglected to pray. There needs to be the combination of prayer together with seeking to live for the glory of Christ and serving Him. We acknowledge our dependence upon God by our prayers and are being foolish in the extreme by thinking we can do anything without the help of God realised through prayer.
When we as believers neglect to pray then clearly we don't have the mind of Christ and are not following the example of Christ. A major cause of spiritual decline is a neglect of prayer. I'm sure when we come to die as believers in Christ, a great regret we will have is that we didn't pray more.
"O what peace we often forfeit!
O what needless pain we bear!
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer."
