He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death

“He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death"

(Isaiah 53v9)

Normally those put to death as criminals would be buried in a pauper’s grave, that is what would have been prepared for Jesus and the two criminals crucified with Him.

On Jesus death, which was in no doubt with His subsequent burial, we also have evidence of His resurrection seeing He was buried. One of Jesus followers who was a rich man, Joseph of Arimathea, asked for Jesus’s body that he might bury it. We know from the gospels that he was an honourable man waiting for the kingdom of God. We are also told he was a good and just man who was a member of the Sanhedrin. This was the great Jewish body that judged their religious and civil matters. They had agreed to and plotted to put Jesus to death, something Joseph hadn't agreed with. We are told in John's gospel that Joseph for fear of the Jews was a secret disciple of Jesus.

Pilate granted his request seeing he was rich and a member of the Sanhedrin. Joseph placed the body of Jesus in a tomb he had purchased for his own death, therefore it had never been used. So, Jesus wasn't buried in a poor criminal’s grave but a rich man's in fulfilment of prophecy.

Remarkably the man who had been a secret disciple of Jesus, when it was dangerous and Jesus followers fled, comes forward as one of Jesus followers. It seems having seen what Jesus in love for him went through to save him, he must identify himself as a disciple of Christ who loved him and gave Himself for him.

This Easter weekend as you realise afresh something of the depth of Christs love for you, dying for your sins, may your love for Him grow so you own Him as your Saviour and Lord who you serve.
