The beauty of Christian unity

The beauty of Christian unity

Psalm 133

There is such a thing as uniformity which isn't the unity of believers in Christ that the word of God speaks of. The unity of believers in Christ is, "A unity of the Spirit". This psalm reminds us that the unity of believers in Christ is a good and pleasant thing. Christians all have the same Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. So, they all serve the same master, all being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Believers also are governed by the same word of God and shall be with Christ in the same heaven.

The picture the psalmist gives of the unity of believers in Christ in verses 2 and 3 is one of a comprehensive and joyful unity. Real genuine Christian unity is refreshing to all believers in Christ and a powerful witness to the ungodly world (John 17 v 21). There is no doubt that Christian unity is a very powerful thing. Some years ago when in Canada I saw Niagara Falls. The waters I saw if they were divided into individual drops would seem no more than falling rain. However united together those waters were a powerful force to see. True unity between believers is blessed of God, "For there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore" verse 3.

Don't think of Christian unity as being members of a particular denomination being united together as it's much more than that. It is the loving relationship which should exist between all genuine believers in Christ, irrespective of nationality, age or academic ability.

"So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another" (Romans 12 v 5).
