The soul's anchor
Hebrews 6 v 19
One of the saddest and most devastating things revealed by God in His word is found in the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. God tells us that without Christ as our Saviour, we live without God in this world, and will die without any genuine hope. People foolishly imagine when they die they will be eternally blessed and happy, but God says this is totally without foundation without Christ. God says that the believer in Christ has a hope that isn't wishful thinking but is certain, reserved in heaven for them.
It is the Lord Jesus Christ that is the anchor of the soul of the believer. An anchor gives a ship steadiness and security, and Christ gives these to all who believe on Him. Hope is looking forward to something that is to come and a well founded hope is the assurance what we hope for will be realised. The believer in Christ's great hope is to ultimately be with Christ and the fulness of joy that will bring for evermore. There is no hope of this without faith in Christ. God tells us on faith in Christ Jesus that we can be assured we have eternal life. Sailors would say it is absolute folly to go to sea without an anchor but that is nothing compared to the folly of living and dying without Christ.
A well known hymn asks the question, "Will your anchor hold in the floods of death?" The hymn goes on to tell us that the believer in Christ has an anchor that will,
"We have an anchor that keeps the soul,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviours love!"
