The wiles of the devil and modern technology
God in His word tells us not to be ignorant of Satan's devices, (2 Cor. 2 v 11), God also tells us of the wiles of the devil, (Eph.6 v 11). We can see examples of this in our use of modern technology to communicate.
- It is good in this lockdown that we can hear the preaching of God's word through the internet and other forms. However, the devil even before this crisis has sought to get Christians thinking they don't need to go to church and worship God with other believers. Well you might as well say they need not obey God. The word of God in the O.T and N.T commands God's people to gather together to worship. We are told in Hebrews 10 v 25 "Not to forsake (neglect) the assembling (gathering) together." Knowing the wiles of the devil when this crisis is over, it wouldn't be surprising to see him try to get believers to wrongly neglect gathering together. Two excellent articles on this by Albert Mohler and Jeremy Walker are in the May Evangelical Times.
- The wiles of the devil are also seen in WhatsApp. groups. We don't have a church WhatsApp. group set up by the church leaders. There may be groups set up by various individuals to share family news and birthday arrangements. A church WhatsApp group is good to share prayer requests, meetings changes or cancellations and some family news. However, the devil is so wily and has already caused damage in local churches through such groups. Some examples so you are not ignorant of his devices:
- An individual puts a spiritual thought on which some like. However, the elders and deacons see there is biblical error and correct it on the group, resulting in upset and strife.
- Someone puts an idea on the group and some post they like it but the elders and deacons see that it's a worldly not biblical approach and make that clear to the group. The result being ill feeling in the church.
- A person puts what they think is humorous on the site and people like it but others in church feel it's inappropriate and make that clear, you can imagine the problems that causes.
Sadly the 3 examples above have all happened on several occasions in sound evangelical churches, no wonder God speaks of the wiles of the devil ! The devil is so subtle and things that can have good uses, he uses for evil purposes. So, let's not be ignorant of his wiles and devices.
