"Whatsoever he saith to you, do it"
(John 2 v 5)
The advice given above by Mary to the servants at the wedding in Cana, is good for us as believers in Christ. We should from the moment we come to faith in Christ, ask in every situation, "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" (Acts 9 v 6).
Jesus doesn't leave us in the dark regarding the cost involved in trusting in and following Him in this world (Luke 14 v 26-33). There are many examples of the cost involved when we obey God.
God told Noah He was going to send a flood as a judgement upon man's wickedness. He is commanded by God to build an ark which in some respects was like a large container vessel. The general population thought the idea of a flood was nonsense, and Noah was a fool for doing what God commanded but he faithfully did what God had commanded. Abraham is commanded to offer up as a sacrifice his much loved son, Isaac. Yet he immediately set about doing what God commanded no matter the enormous cost. The 3 Israelite young men in Babylon obeyed God in not worshipping an image , contrary to the edict of the king, even though they were told the cost of not doing this would be being thrown into a furnace. Daniel knowing that the cost of praying to God as God commanded, would be being thrown into a den of lions, still obeyed God.
We cannot receive Jesus as Saviour, to save us from our sinful disobedience of God, if we aren't going to obey God if it's going to cost us or doesn't suit us. We need as professing believers in Christ to take to heart what God says in 1 John 2 v 3, 4. "Hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."
